Charges are presented to the House Judiciary Committee either by the Justice Department or by an indepenent review council

Step 1

HJC Drafts Articles of Impeachment

After revewing the presented evidence, the House Judiciary Committee draft the language and reasons for the impeachment into a document called the Articles of Impeachment

Step 2

HJC Debates and Votes on Articles of Impeachment

The House Judiciary Committee will debate and evaluate the charges against the accused. A simply majority vote is needed to pass this step.

Step 3

House of Representatives Debates and Votes on Articles of Impeachment

The full House of Representatives debates the presented Articles of Impeachment and proceeds with a vote. A simply majority is needs for for this vote. If this vote passes, the accused is considered impeached

Step 4

Senate Holds a Trial

The Senate will act as the jury in the trial against the accused. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is the presiding Judge for this trial.

Step 5

Senate Votes to Remove the Accused

A two-thirds majority vote is needed from the sitting senators to remove the accused from office.
